Pregnancy Massage

What is pregnancy massage?

Pregnancy massage is massage therapy specifically tailored for the expectant mother’s individual needs. It is also called pre-natal massage.

How is pregnancy massage different from regular massage?

The mother’s body must be properly positioned and supported during the massage. At our clinic we use the best system on the market for this – The Body Cushion ©. Proper positioning ensures comfort and safety for both mother and baby. One unique aspect of the Body Cushion is that it allows for both prone (face down) massage into very late stage pregnancy, or side-lying massage.
During pregnancy massage some massage techniques such as deep tissue work are not used in certain areas. As well, certain areas of the body are also avoided during pregnancy.  The primary difference with this type of massage is that it will be tailored to your unique situation. No two bodies are the same, and no two pregnancies are the same.

What are the benefits of pregnancy massage?

Pregnancy massage has been found to reduce anxiety, stress, decrease swelling in the arms and legs, and relieve aches and pains in muscles and joints. As the pregnancy progresses the mother must carry more weight, and particularly in late stage pregnancy the mother’s centre of gravity moves further forward. As the body compensates for the changing centre of gravity, more and more back muscles and joints begin to complain. Swelling of the feet is also common in later stages due to circulatory issues related to the position and presence of the fetus. The presence of certain hormones in the mother’s body (particularly relaxin) causes ligaments to loosen up in preparation for the birthing. While this makes delivery easier, it can have somewhat unwanted side effects in the feet and pelvis in the last few months of pregnancy. Massage addresses many of these issues, and it does it at a time when the mother has few pharmaceutical options to address the pain. Not only can massage be physically beneficial, but the human touch can be comforting and provide emotional support during pregnancy.

Our pregnancy massages can be any duration from 30 minutes to 75 minutes long.
